Borderland (German border area ) is the first studio album by the English band The Chevin and was released on October 19, 2012 in Germany. While the album made its European debut in Great Britain on October 15, 2012, it was released in the USA on September 25, 2012.
Background information
After the success and popularity of The Chevin grew steadily as a result of many live performances in the USA , the decision was made to record a first studio album in spring 2011. In order to be able to work on it as undisturbed as possible, the choice fell on the Sonic Ranch studio complex, which is located south of El Paso in the US state of Texas . Together with the producer Noah Shain, whom the band met in Los Angeles , they began recording a large number of self-composed songs. Borderland was formed even before The Chevin signed a record deal.
Musically some influences can be recognized: The similarities to U2 , The Killers , Keane or Band of Horses are unmistakable. The album is a mix of powerful stadium anthems, country / folk songs and melancholy ballads. One of the most striking features is the vocal power of singer Coyle Girelli, who convinces with his vibrato in various titles, especially in the high areas of the head voice . To enhance the band's opulent sound, they were supported by musicians from the El Paso Philharmonic Orchestra.
On October 14, 2012, a worldwide Borderland tour began, stretching from Great Britain to America and finally ending in Germany.
Reviews
The album received good reviews for the most part. CDStarts addresses the significant similarity to the bands The Killers and Keane , but without seeing anything bad in them, as the titles represent a high level musically: “ Borderland is an album that pop / rock fans should immediately listen to. There are no inconsistencies here, just stadium rockers on the assembly line. With the mixture of large-scale anthem and intimacy in the singing, the opener champion puts on the strengths of the killers, who have neglected them on Battle Born . The structures of the last Killers outputs are repeated with an intrusive precision. The Chevin beat out the great hymns in a way that makes you dizzy. The similarities to Keane's exploits ( Watch How You Go by Strangeland ) are unmistakable (prime example: Beautiful World ). But if you steal, then only from the best and greatest. And that's exactly what The Chevin do. With success. That deserves a lot of respect, because even if everything seems suspiciously familiar, you have to shake a multitude of great melodies out of your sleeve first. "
