Boresighter

A Boresighter (in German about bore axis visor ) (also Boresighter or Einschießhilfe ) is an instrument for calibration of an aiming aid to the bore axis of the barrel of a tube weapon .

A Boresighter is often before the zeroing used for coarse adjustment of the aiming aid. This saves a lot of test shots. The traditional approach without a boresighter is to look through the barrel, aim at a target, and aim at the same target with the aiming aid. This procedure is particularly suitable for drop barrel weapons ; For many other types of weapons, however, it is time-consuming because the breech must first be removed.

The boresighter must be attached as parallel to the barrel as possible . Above all, boresighters allow a fairly good horizontal setting. The ballistic curve must be taken into account for vertical adjustment .

Different systems are used:

  • Boresighters with their own target optics. The target optics are often an angled telescope . The aiming aid of the weapon must be adjusted until the same target is aimed at as with the optics of the boresighters.
  • Boresighter as a collimator with reticle as a checkered grid. The boresighter is installed in front of the optical aiming aid of the weapon. The shooter looks at the reticle of the collimator with the aiming aid of the weapon and is thus able to set the aiming aid. Most of these boresighters use the available ambient light , some also have an additional light source to illuminate the reticle.
  • Boresighter as a laser emitter . The laser is either on the muzzle or on the chamber . When it is in the chamber, it is called a laser cartridge or adjustment cartridge . The boresighter has the shape of a cartridge and is loaded into the chamber like a normal cartridge. The boresighter shines a laser point on a test target either from the muzzle or through the barrel, parallel to the barrel core. The aiming aid of the weapon can be adjusted to this point of light.

There are various options for attaching the boresighters to the barrel. With large calibers, e.g. B. a tank cannon , the boresighter can be attached inside the tube. For small calibers, this can be done with a suitable rod in caliber diameter as an adapter. There are also technical solutions to attach the boresighter parallel to the pipe or magnetically on the muzzle .

The US military accepts the accuracy of the laser boresighters for some weapons with open sights , so that there is no need to aim in. Weapons with optical aiming aids, on the other hand, must also be shot in.
