from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Boril Assen Stres ( Bulgarian Борил Асен Стрез , scientific transliteration Boril Asen Strez; † after 1218) was Tsar of the Bulgarians from 1207 to 1218 . He belonged to the Assen dynasty .

Boril Assen was the son of a daughter of the Boljar Ivan Assen I , the founder of the dynasty of the same name. Boril was thus the nephew of Tsar Kalojan Assen . His father Stres was a powerful Boljare in what is now south-western Bulgaria and Macedonia. When Tsar Kaloyan was preparing for a siege of Thessaloniki in the autumn of 1207 , Boril joined a Boljar conspiracy with the wife of Kalojan, a Cuman princess. Tsar Kaloyan was murdered in the camp. Then Boril was in the capital Tarnovo for Tsar crowned.
