Boris Orazowiç Şyhmyradow

Boris Orazowiç Şyhmyradow ( Russian : Бори́с Ора́зович Шихмура́дов, Boris Orasowitsch Schichmuradow ; born May 25, 1949 in Ashgabat , Turkmen Soviet Socialist Republic , USSR ) was a Turkmen politician between 1995 and 2000. He was a Turkmen politician against the Turkmen in 1995 and he was a former foreign minister in 2002 then President Saparmyrat Nyýazow accused and sentenced to life imprisonment. Practically nothing is known about his life after entering prison. It is unclear whether he is still alive.

Career

Şyhmyradow graduated from a Russian school in Ashgabat in 1966 and then studied journalism at Lomonosov University in Moscow . Between 1971 and 1986 he worked as a journalist at the Academy of Pedagogical Sciences of the USSR. At the same time, Şyhmyradov worked in the Soviet embassies in Pakistan and India until 1991 . In 1986 he received another degree from the Diplomatic Academy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the USSR.

After Turkmenistan declared its independence from the Soviet Union, Şyhmyradov was appointed Deputy Foreign Minister and Deputy Chairman of the Young Republic's Council of Ministers. In 1995 he rose to become the country's foreign minister. At the same time, he was appointed special envoy of the Turkmen President for legal status issues in the Caspian Sea and Afghanistan . He also served as the rector of the Turkmenistan National Institute for Sports and Tourism and as the president of the Turkmenistan Olympic Committee.

In 2001, Şyhmyradov was sent as an ambassador to the People's Republic of China . But in November of the same year he announced that he would join the open opposition to Niyazov and founded the People's Democratic Movement of Turkmenistan.

On November 25, 2002, an unsuccessful assassination attempt was carried out against Nyýazow. Şyhmyradov was accused of being the main mastermind behind the plot. The same day the accused, who was in Ashgabat at the time, was arrested. Just five days later, he was sentenced to 25 years in prison by the Turkmenistan Supreme Court. Shortly after the verdict was announced, the indictment was changed and Şyhmyradov was sentenced to life imprisonment for high treason.

After Nyýazov's death in December 2006, his successor Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow was asked about the fate of Şyhmyradov during his visit to Columbia University in September 2007. Berdihumamedov said he believed Şhymyradov and Batyr Berdiyews (another convicted politician) were still alive. Since then, there have been no signs of life from Şhymyradov or any information about his detention conditions.
