Batyr Berdiýew
Batyr Ataýewiç Berdiýew ( Russian Батыр Атаевич Бердыев Batyr Atajewitsch Berdyjew ; born October 3, 1960 in Ashgabat , then Turkmen SSR , today Turkmenistan) is a former politician in Turkmenistan .
Career
Berdiýew was Deputy Foreign Minister from 1992 to 1994 . From 1994 to 2000 he was ambassador for Austria , Slovakia and the Czech Republic as well as the OSCE . From 2000 to 2001 he was his country's foreign minister. As a reason for his dismissal were u. a. stated his alleged alcoholism , lack of knowledge of the Turkmen language and incompetence on some foreign policy issues. His successor in the external department was Raşit Meredow . Berdiýew was arrested in 2002 and shortly thereafter sentenced to 25 years in prison for participating in a murder conspiracy against President Saparmyrat Nyýazow . There is no reliable information about his future fate. From time to time rumors circulated that Berdiýew was no longer alive.
