Boris Ottokar Unbegaun (originally Russian Борис Генрихович Унбегаун / Boris Genrichowitsch Unbegaun ; born August 23 . Jul / 4. September  1898 greg. In Moscow , † 4. March 1973 in New York ) was a Russian Slawist German descent .

After the Russian civil war, in which he had fought on the side of the whites, Unbegaun first emigrated to Slovenia, where he began studying at the University of Ljubljana . He later moved to Paris, where he received his doctorate in 1935. In 1940 he was deported by the Germans to the Buchenwald concentration camp , where he stayed until the end of the war. After 1945 he taught in Strasbourg, Brussels and Oxford, where he became Professor of Comparative Slavic Philology in 1953. In 1965 he was called to the University of New York , where he worked until his death.

Unbegaun devoted himself in particular to research into modern and older Russian. He worked on the Oxford English-Russian dictionary. In the religious-historical book series Mana , he made the contribution to the religion of the Slavs .
