The Borneo black banded squirrel ( Callosciurus orestes ) is a species of squirrel from the genus of the real beautiful squirrel ( Callosciurus ). It occurs in the north of the island of Borneo .

features

The Borneo black banded squirrel reaches a head-torso length of about 15 centimeters and a weight of about 280 grams. The tail also reaches a length of about 14 to 15 centimeters and is thus about as long as the rest of the body. The back color of the animals is brown with a fine mottling of lighter brown. Behind the ears, the species has a sand-colored spot and on the sides thin stripes, the upper one of which is white and the lower one black. The belly is gray, sometimes dark gray or lighter with a reddish tinge.

distribution

Distribution area (brown) of the Borneo black banded squirrel

The Borneo black banded squirrel occurs in northern Borneo in the Malay provinces of Sarawak and Sabah as well as the Indonesian Kalimantan . As a type of middle altitude it occurs in the highlands of Sarawak in the Kelabit at altitudes over 1100 meters, at Kinabalu at altitudes from 1100 to 1700 meters and on Mount Dulit around 1200 meters.

Way of life

Like all other species of the genus, the Borneo black banded squirrel is primarily arboric . It occurs only in the forests of the lower to middle mountain regions and perhaps more rarely in the higher-lying forests of two-winged fruit trees . It lives mainly in small and medium-sized trees and, like all other species of the genus, this species primarily feeds on plants, especially fruits, plus insects, here mostly ants.

Systematics

The Borneo black banded squirrel is classified as an independent species within the genus of the real beautiful squirrel ( Callosciurus ), which consists of 15 species. The first scientific description comes from Oldfield Thomas from 1895, who described the species on the basis of individuals from Mount Dulit in Sarawak, Malaysia.

Apart from the nominate form, no further subspecies are distinguished within the species .

Status, threat and protection

The Borneo black banded squirrel is classified as Least Concern by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN). The species lives predominantly at medium altitudes, which are only slightly affected by habitat changes and logging, and there are no known risks to its existence.
