Borris Goetz

Borris Goetz (born July 23, 1915 in Frankfurt am Main ; † August 23, 1998 in Bad Münster am Stein-Ebernburg) was a German painter and graphic artist.

Life

Borris Goetz studied from 1933 to 1935 at the Städelschule in Frankfurt am Main with Johann Vincenz Cissarz and Karl Peter Röhl . In 1935 he became a trainee in the studio of the commercial artist Hans Bohn , and in the following year in the Bauer foundry . He then worked as a graphic designer in Berlin, where he completed an evening course on “Klosterstrasse”. In 1937 he traveled to Switzerland, Italy and southern France, where he spent almost two years. He went to Cannes and met Picasso and Matisse, among others . During this time he also met Consuelo Suncín Sandoval , the wife of Antoine de Saint-Exupéry , whom he painted several times. In the summer of 1938 he attended a summer course at the Städel School in Frankfurt am Main with Franz Karl Delavilla . The following year he stayed in Paris as a student of Jean Villeri , but returned to Frankfurt when the war broke out. There he was arrested and imprisoned by the Gestapo in 1940 . He was then able to work again as a painter and graphic artist, but was drafted in 1943 and spent his military service in Russia and northern France. In 1944 he was taken prisoner of war there, came to Southampton as a prisoner of war, later to the Northumberland POW Camp 18 and was then taken to POW Camp 186, Berekurch Hall near Colchester in Essex . During this time, many drawings were made by fellow prisoners, but also sketches and representations of the surrounding castles.

After his release, Goetz resumed his artistic work in Bad Schwalbach in 1946 . In the same year he became chief graphic artist in the Atelier Werbekunst - W. Schulz GmbH in Frankfurt am Main. During these years he had good contact with the AFN Symphony Orchestra in Frankfurt and made many drawings and pictures of American musicians. This contact also connected him to the Frankfurt jazz scene. For them he also designed the poster for the 1st German Jazz Festival in 1953. During this time, in 1949, he carried out commissioned work for the Lanvin fashion house and founded the studio for free and applied graphics “Quadrat” in the philanthropist of the Jewish community. In 1951 he was appointed lecturer for graphic design at the "Institut für Modeschaffen" (fashion advertising graphics). From 1954 to 1957 he was a board member of the artists' association "Frankfurt Sezession". In 1955 he sat in the "Expert Committee for Fine and Applied Arts" of the State of Hesse. In 1958, Borris Goetz co-founded the artists' association “Frankfurter Gruppe (new)” of the Zimmergalerie Franck.

In 1963 Goetz was given a teaching position for art history and musical vision at the Academy of Labor at the University of Frankfurt am Main . In 1964 he was awarded the International Art Prize "Fundus Artis" and an annual grant. In the same year he suffered serious injuries in a car accident, which finally led to his having to give up teaching in 1972; Borris Goetz moved to Bad Münster and devoted himself to his artistic work until 1998.
