Borwin Bandelow (born December 28, 1951 in Göttingen ) is a German psychiatrist , psychologist and psychotherapist . He is an expert on anxiety disorders .

Life

He attended the Westerstede grammar school and studied medicine at the Universities of Göttingen and Tübingen as well as psychology in Göttingen. In 1978 he was awarded a Dr. med. PhD . Bandelow is a specialist in neurology and psychiatry / psychotherapy . In 1997 he received his habilitation with the Panic and Agoraphobia Scale (PAS) in Göttingen. He was appointed adjunct professor at the University of Göttingen and is now a senior scientist at the Clinic for Psychiatry and Psychotherapy of the University Medical Center Göttingen . Bandelow is the founder and honorary chairman of the Society for Anxiety Research.

Bandelow is the author of scientific publications, guides, and popular science books. Some of his books have been translated into Chinese, English, Korean or Polish. Bandelow has been listed by Focus magazine since 2015 as one of Germany's top doctors in the field of "anxiety disorders". He was included in the list of the 500 most important German-speaking intellectuals by Cicero magazine in 2019 . In addition, Bandelow is said to be the inventor of the East Frisian jokes, which he is said to have helped to create a first public platform while still at school at Westerstede High School. Since 2007 Bandelow has been a member of the Göttingen doctors' band "Hot Docs", which donates all fees to charitable purposes.
