history

Loismann Botanical Garden, spring aspect

The genesis of the garden begins with the construction of the Dortmund-Ems Canal in the years 1894 to 1895. In the process, an excavation dump was heaped up behind the farm on a field belonging to the farmer Bernhard Loismann . After the area was no longer suitable for agricultural use, the farm owner decided to plant fruit trees on the area and started his project in 1898. At the beginning of the 20th century, the farmer began planting local and exotic, especially Asian and North American trees and shrubs, some of which are still preserved today. His son Karl Loismann in 1945 developed the arboretum further. In order to better supply the garden with water, the farmer had a 1.5 km long water pipe laid from the Teutoburg Forest to his farm.

Plant population

In total, the Botanical Garden includes around 300 different types of plants, especially large deciduous and coniferous trees, flowering trees, trees with striking leaf structures, ornamental trees and various hanging and dwarf shapes.

In 1910 Loismann planted an American sequoia tree ( Sequoia giganteum ) in the complex. The cypress plant has a height of 30 meters and a conical crown. The garden also features the rare Coulter pine (Pinus cuolteri) . After this hardy and warmth-loving pine species froze to death in the cold winter of 1929, the plant lover Loismann ordered a new cone in California and cultivated the conifer in a glass house before the pine was planted back in the arboretum. The image of the garden was dominated by numerous tall, evergreen conifers . In addition to trees, Loismann also raised poisonous and non-poisonous medicinal plants .

Are remarkable shrubs as in the botanical garden Honoki Magnolia (Magnolia hypoleuca), Torreya nucifera (Torreya nucifera), incense cedar (Calocedrus decurrens), chestnut (Castanea sativa), handkerchief tree (Davidia involucrata), Japanese cedar (Cryptomeria japonica) and Ginkgo ( Ginkgo biloba "Pendula") .

Furnishing

Loismann provided interesting woody plants with their botanical names and a brief description of their origin and their respective characteristics. The botanical garden originally included a so-called negro hut , which is no longer preserved. The racist name probably referred to a simple thatched gazebo.

A wooden accommodation hut is located on the hill at the entrance to the complex. Numerous benches invite you to stay in the publicly accessible botanical garden.
