King Hyejong ( Korean 혜종 ) (* 912 in Songak , Kingdom of Goryeo ; † 23 October 945 in Songak, Goryeo) was the 2nd King of the Goryeo Empire and the Goryeo Dynasty ( 고려 왕조 ) during his reign from 943 to 945 (918-1392).
Life
Hyejong was the firstborn son of King Taejo ( 태조 ) and his second wife, Queen Janghwa ( 장화 ). His birth name was Wang Mu ( 왕무 ).
In 921 he was appointed Crown Prince by his father with the support of General Park Sulhui ( 박술희 ). He resided in the eastern palace of the city and often carried out military actions by the state. He followed instructions with decency and always showed respect for his teachers, which earned him recognition and reputation.
He succeeded his father on the throne when he died on July 4th 943 and was accepted as monarch by many in the country. He met a rumor that his brother Jeongjong ( 정종 ) was planning high treason against him with even more friendliness. But over time, King Hyejong felt increasingly insecure and constantly surrounded himself with armed guards whom he trusted.
Shortly before his death, his father, King Taejo, had foreseen the “The Ten Orders ” , called Hunyo Sipcho ( 훈요십조 ) in Korean , stating that the kingdom and the throne were not yet considered secure. Only two years after his accession to the throne, King Hyejong had to do with the rebellion of Wang Gyu ( 왕규 ), a member of the royal family by marriage, who tried to have him killed. The conspiracy failed, but Hyejong died of natural causes that same year.
His tomb can be found in the city of Kaesŏng in North Korea .
