King Jeongjong ( Korean 정종 ) (* 923 in Songak , Kingdom of Goryeo ; † April 13, 949 in Songak, Goryeo) was the 3rd king of the Goryeo Empire and the Goryeo Dynasty ( 고려 왕조 ) during his reign from 945 to 949 (918-1392).

Life

Jeongjong was the third born son of King Taejo ( 태조 ) and his third wife, Queen Sinmyeong-Sunseong ( 신명순 성 ). His birth name was Wang Yo ( 왕요 ).

While his half-brother Hyejong ascended the throne after the death of their father, King Taejo, it was rumored that Jeongjong was trying to challenge him for the throne. But Hyejong then treated Jeongjong with increasing friendliness. When Hyejong died in 945, Jeongjong succeeded him on the throne and put down the rebellion of Wang Gyu ( 왕규 ), a member of the royal family, who had previously tried to have his half-brother killed.

In 946, King Jeongjong tried with 70,000 units of grain that he donated to strengthen and promote Buddhism in the country and to strengthen the fragile power of the royal family, he tried the capital of the kingdom from Songak ( 송악 ) to Pyongyang ( 평양 ) relocate. His consideration was to withdraw from the power center of those who at the time helped to found the empire and who have been strengthened. But he was no longer able to carry out the project because he died in 949 after only four years in office.
