King Deokjong ( Korean 덕종 ) (born June 9, 1016 in Kaesŏng , Kingdom of Goryeo ; † October 31, 1034 in Kaesŏng, Goryeo) was the 9th King of the Goryeo Empire and the Goryeo Dynasty during his reign from 1031 to 1034 ( 고려 왕조 ) (918-1392).
Life
Deokjong was the first son of King Hyeonjong ( 현종 ) and his mother was Queen Wonseong ( 원성 ), who came from the Ansan Kim clan. At his birth Deokjong was given the name Wang Heum ( 왕흠 ).
In 1022, just eight years old, he was made crown prince as the firstborn son and succeeded him to the throne at the age of only 15 after his father's death in 1031. He was married to two women, Queen Gyeongseong of the Gyeongju Kim Clan ( 경성 ) and Queen Hyosa of the Ansan Kim Clan ( 효사 ), but the marriages remained childless. He had two daughters with two ladies of the court.
Like his predecessors, he dealt with the military threat posed by the Khitan of the Liao dynasty in the north-west of the country and finally gave the order in the third year of the reign to build the Cheolli Jangseong ( 천리 장성 ) (translated: "Thousand Li Wall" ), a defensive wall , consisting of a stone wall, starting from the Yalu River in the northwest of the country to the east coast. The wall was completed after Deokjong's death in 1044 under the reign of his brother King Jeongjong ( 정종 ).
From Deokjong's reign it is known, among other things, that from the third year of his reign children and women were forbidden to wear golden hairpins in their hair or embroidered silk clothing and from the Goryeosa ( 고려사 ) (historiography of the Goryeo dynasty) it is known that all Kings who followed King Deokjong in the middle of the 11th century were given five to six times as many Bodhisattva (Belief -Regulating Buddhism) rules as their predecessors.
Deokjong died on October 31, 1034. The circumstances of his death are not known, nor is his grave.
