Garden and Institute of Botany

The Botanical Garden of Pisa was founded in 1543 and 1544 at the instigation of the doctor and botanist Luca Ghini , who himself did not come from the central Italian city of Pisa . He was financially supported by Cosimo I de 'Medici , the Grand Duke of Tuscany. According to the date it was founded, it is the world's oldest university botanical garden . However, since it is no longer in its original location, this rank belongs to the Botanical Garden of Padua .

The garden was moved to another location in 1563, then changed location again from 1591 to 1595 and definitely found its place near the Piazza dei Miracoli . In the garden at that time there was also the Institute for Botany (Istituto di Botanica) and a natural science museum.

In 1814 the museum was separated from the garden. The arrangement of the beds and plants has changed several times over the years. In the 19th century, the plant reached a size of 148 beds with 2000 plant species. The area was expanded to around 3 hectares in the 19th century. In 1984 the Faculty of Botany and the Garden came under the Botany Department of the University of Pisa . In 2006 this department was closed and the garden was placed under the university's biology department.
