Botanical Institute (Yerevan)

The Botanical Institute in the Armenian capital Yerevan is part of the Armenian National Academy of Sciences . It is located on the grounds of the Botanical Garden .

history

Armenia's first institution for botanical sciences was the Herbarium of the Museum of Natural History, founded by AB Schelkownikow in the period from 1922 to 1925. This herbarium was then expanded into the Botanical Institute in 1933 under the leadership of the USSR .

Scientifically, the institute is mainly active in the vegetation of Armenia, the physiology of higher plants and landscape design in urban environments. A large part of Armenia's biodiversity is still concentrated in the herbarium . It is home to around 500,000 plants. The results of the study of the Armenian flora have been summarized since 1950 in eleven volumes with the name "Flora of Armenia" by Armen Tachtajjan . With the completion of the eleventh volume, more than 3,200 species of vascular plants have been cataloged. In addition, more than 100 monographs , 60 commemorative publications and more than 6,000 scientific articles have been published.
