Armen Takhtajan ( Armenian Արմեն Լեւոնի Թախտաջյան , Russian Армен Леонович Тахтаджян / poor Leonovich Tachtadschjan , in the English literature consistently poor Takhtajan ; born May 28 . Jul / 10. June  1910 greg. In Shusha , Russian Empire , today Azerbaijan ( Nagorno-Karabakh ); † November 13, 2009 in Saint Petersburg ) was an Armenian-Soviet botanist . Its official botanical author abbreviation is “ Takht. "

Life

Takhtajyan studied at the All-Unions Institute for Sub-Tropical Grains in Tbilisi and was head of the botanical faculty of the Armenian State University from 1938 to 1948. From 1944 to 1948 he was director of the Botanical Institute of the Armenian Academy of Sciences. He lost the post because he openly appeared as an opponent of Lysenkoism . But soon afterwards he found a job at the Leningrad State University , where Lysenko's influence was not so strong. He was a scientist at the Komarow Botanical Institute of the Soviet Academy of Sciences in Leningrad, from 1976 to 1986 as director.

Tachtadschjan dealt in particular with the evolution and systematics of the higher plants. In particular, his systematics, published in 1997, is a reference work of the plant system of higher plants based on morphological, physiological and cytological characteristics (see systematics of the Bedecktsamer according to Tachtajjan ). His system was developed in the 1940s and became popular in the West in the 1950s. He was in scientific exchange with the plant taxonomist Arthur Cronquist .

He was a member of the Russian Academy of Sciences , the Leopoldina , the Finnish Academy of Sciences, the Armenian Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Sciences (1971). He was also President of the Soviet Botanical Society (1973) and the International Association for Plant Taxonomy (1975).

Honors

In 1990 he became a hero of socialist work , not least because of his resistance to Lysenkoism. The plant genera Takhtajania Baranova & J.-F.Leroy from the Winteraceae family, Takhtajaniella V.E.Avet , are named after Tachtajjan . from the cruciferous family (Brassicaceae), Takhtajaniantha Nazarova and Takhtajanianthus A.B.De from the sunflower family (Asteraceae).
