Botho from Gamp
Botho Freiherr von Gamp-Massaunen (born May 4, 1894 in Berlin , † August 1977 in Stockach ) was a German painter and graphic artist .
life and work
Von Gamp grew up in Berlin. In 1913 he moved to Munich to study painting and later to Paris . Here a close friendship arose with Max Pechstein and Henri Matisse with the following turn to Impressionism . In 1950 he returned to Germany, where he settled in Bad Schachen on Lake Constance . At the same time he set up a second studio in Foria on Ischia .
Since the 1970s, Botho von Gamp had also had a close friendship with the gallery owner Horst Kaiser, who regularly represented him at international art fairs through the Apfelbaum gallery. In 1976 Karl-Georg von Stackelberg published a portrait of the artist with the title “The painter Botho von Gamp”. In 1984 a comprehensive catalog with texts by the art historian Gerd Presler was published posthumously by Verlag der Galerie Apfelbaum , illuminating the artist's entire oeuvre on 120 pages.
