Bow Island is a small town in southern Alberta , Canada .

history

The first families arrived at Bow Island around 1900. 1910 followed the official village status ( Village ), in February 1912 Bow Iceland was as a city ( Town classified). There are many stories about the origin of the name Bow Island. Probably the best known is that the community of Grassy Lake, 25 km to the west, was formerly called Bow Island and their names were simply reversed.

In the early 1950s , the water supply was expanded to the surrounding area, which doubled the population. Bow Island lies in the midst of approximately 450 km² of fertile land. Some of the newest and most modern irrigation systems in the world are located there.

Demographics

The city, located at an altitude of 790 m, had a population of 1790 in 2006, which was distributed among 631 households. With an area of ​​5.92 km², the population density is 302.4 inhabitants per square kilometer.

The 2011 census revealed a population of 2,025 for the municipality. The community's population increased by 13.1% compared to the 2006 census, while the population in the province of British Alberta only grew by 10.8%.
In 2011, the median age of the population was 33.7 years (men = 31.3; women = 36.5), while in the rest of the province it was 36.5 years (men = 35.9; women = 37.1).

In terms of traffic, the community is accessed by the Alberta Highway 3 ( Crowsnest Highway ) and a railway line.
In the east of the municipality is the local airfield, Bow Island Airport ( IATA airport code : -, ICAO code : -, Transport Canada Identifier: CEF3). The airfield only has a short asphalt runway, a little over 900 meters long.

Culture

Blues at the Bow Live is a blues concert program opened in 1994 . The concerts, which are always sold out, take place in the historic Bow Theater and attract guests from all over the province.
