Brainard Homestead State Park (also: Brainerd Homestead State Park ) is a state park in the US state of Connecticut in the area of the municipality of East Haddam . The park covers an area of 25 acres (10 hectares) and has no buildings. In 2012 the fields were used for agriculture.

history

The first records of Brainard Homestead State Park are found in 1842 when Timothy Green built a farmhouse on the site. He never lived there himself, but leased it to Jonathan Morgan. In March 1854, the site was sold to Selden Tyler Brainerd. Together with his wife Harrietzog these five children in the 30 ft (9.1 m) × 25 ft (7.6 m; 70 m²) small farmhouse. The house was later transferred to Geraldine W. Hayden in a will. Hayden died in 1929 and bequeathed the property to the State of Connecticut so that the property could be used as a memorial to her grandfather. A Connecticut State Park and Forest Commission report found it was not an ideal situation because it was difficult to map out a site in advance without first clarifying the uses. Mrs. Hayden was unknown to the officials, and although the country offered certain advantages, it was not until the 1930s that all bureaucratic hurdles were cleared. The delay also resulted from the condition that William Brainerd, one of the children, had been granted lifelong usage rights. William Brainerd died in 1936, fulfilling the legacy. The state later demolished the buildings and converted the area into a state park.

The land use files show that the farm's fields were once leased to a Mortimer Gelston. Even today, the surrounding fields and the fields of the state park are cultivated. Obviously the basement foundations and landmarks are still preserved. When the Brainard Homestead was finally converted to a state park is unknown, although it is certain that this happened before the death of William Brainard. In the State of Connecticut Register and Manual of 1934, Brainard Homestead State Park is listed as the 39th state park with 25 acres. As early as 1932, the State of Connecticut Register and Manual recorded 40 state parks.
