Bramwell Tillsley

Bramwell Harold Tillsley (born August 18, 1931 in Kitchener ; † November 2, 2019 ) was the 14th General of the Salvation Army from 1993 to 1994 .

The son of Salvationists was in Kitchener in Ontario ( Canada born). His parents immigrated to Canada from the United Kingdom in 1928 . As a child and adolescent, he took part in the various child and youth work programs offered by the local Salvation Army community (corps). At a music competition in which he won first prize, he met his future wife Maude Pitcher, who won second prize in the competition. The two married in 1953. The following year their first child Barbara was born.

The couple attended the Salvation Army officer training center. They completed this training in 1956 and were then community leaders (corps officers) in Windsor (Nova Scotia) and then in Oakville (Ontario) .

After serving as corps officer, the couple went to London for six years to teach at the William Booth Memorial Training College , the Salvation Army's international officer training center .

After these six years they were transferred back to Canada to serve as corps officers in the Toronto North Corps. Then Tillsley was called to the training center in Toronto to teach there. As a training manager, he then worked first in Newfoundland and later in the USA East Territory.

In August 1981 Tillsley became principal of the William Booth Memorial Training College in London.

Colonel Tillsley came to the US-South Territory in 1989 as Chief Secretary (Deputy Territorial Director), and in 1989 he became its Territorial Director.

In 1989 he was appointed Territory Commander of the Australia South Territory.

In 1991, Commander Tillsley was appointed Chief of Staff of the Salvation Army .

On April 28, 1993 the High Council of the Salvation Army elected him in the fourth ballot with 29 to 19 votes as the 14th General of the Salvation Army . After only 10 months and nine days, General Tillsley announced his resignation on May 18, 1994, citing health reasons.
