Branitschewzen

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Branitschewzen (Serbian Браничевци ) were a South Slavic tribe in the 9th century in what is now Serbia .

area

The name suggests the Braničevo Castle ( Branicova ) at the tributary of the Mlava into the Danube as the center of the tribe.

history

The area came under the rule of the Franconian Empire around 818 . From 818 to 821 the Branitschewzen were on the side of the Franks against the independence efforts of Prince Lyudevit of Lower Pannonia . In 822 the Branitschewzen were envoys to Emperor Ludwig the Pious at the Reichstag in Frankfurt .

In 824 and 826 the Bulgarian Khan Omurtag tried in vain for diplomatic clarification for the area. In 827 or 829 he conquered it again.

The Arab scholar Al-Masʿūdī mentioned a Branizabin tribe .
