features

Little information on species-specific characteristics is known about the Brazilian crested rat. It is described as a large species within the comb rats and is brown in color.

The distribution area of the Brazilian crested rat is limited to the south of Uruguay , where the species is only found endemically in the region around Minas in the Lavalleja department .

Way of life

There is no information about the way of life of the species.

Systematics

The Brazilian crested rat is currently classified as an independent species within the genus of crested rats ( Ctenomys ), which consists of around 70 species. The first scientific description of the species comes from the naturalist Henri Marie Ducrotay de Blainville in 1826, who described it using individuals from the region around Minas. He himself referred to the site as "des parties intérieures du Brésil de la province de Las Minas" and referred to the state of Minas Gerais in Brazil. Since the region lies outside the range of all known crested rats and crested rats have never been found there, the region around Minas in the Lavalleja department was reconstructed as the actual site . However, only individuals of the Pearson's comb rat ( Ctenomys pearsoni ) have been identified in the region, so that the actual status of these two species with respect to one another is currently unclear.

Apart from the nominate form, no subspecies are distinguished within the species .

Status, threat and protection

The Brazilian Comb rat is not classified in any hazard category by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN) due to a lack of data, but is listed as "data deficient".
