Origin and history

The relationship to the Bloodhound is clear: long catch, wrinkled skin and very good track security . His ancestors came to South America with the Portuguese and Spanish. They carried heavy mastiffs, mastiffs and bloodhounds with them, the offspring of which were used as cattle guards, watch dogs and sniffer dogs on the large farms in Brazil.

description

The Fila Brasileiro is a dog up to 75 cm tall and powerful . The coat is short, smooth, close-fitting, monochrome or brindle, black mask can, but does not have to be. White markings may be present on the paws, chest and tip of the tail. The ears are pendulous, large, thick, V-shaped and broad at the base. The neck appears short and is characterized by the loose throat skin ( dewlap ). The coat colors white, mouse gray, spotted with small or large spots, black and tan and blue are excluded .

Essence

The Fila is a very owner-oriented dog and an excellent watchdog for buildings and herds, works largely independently. Its deep barking can be heard from afar and is almost characteristic of the Fila. What is striking about this breed is the quick reactions that characterize it as a hunting dog for large game. The Fila Brasileiro is suspicious of strangers and is generally very self-confident. His loyalty is proverbial in Brazil.

use

Originally it was used to guard the house, but also to hunt. Therefore, he has a very fine nose and still shows hunting behavior today. Nowadays he is more of a family dog who takes over the guarding of belongings without being asked. Under no circumstances should he do protective work , as he generally shows strong protective behavior. This property should not be encouraged.

During the colonial period of Brazil were Filas used to members of the indigenous people to capture, so that they in the sugar cane - plantations as slaves were used, later they were often used as guard dogs in the plantations, recapture thereby fugitive black slaves.

Breed specific legislation

In some federal states of Germany the Fila is regarded as dangerous and is included in appropriate rattle lists.

In Austria the Fila Brasileiro is on the breed list in two of the three list-leading federal states ( Vienna and Vorarlberg ). Depending on the federal state, a " dog handler license " (Vienna) or a special permit from the mayor (Vorarlberg) is required.

In Switzerland , nine of the thirteen cantons have racial lists on their lists; in these cantons, approval is required for keeping them. Breeding, importation and keeping are prohibited in the cantons of Geneva and Valais . Fila is also one of the list dogs in Denmark .
