The Forst AG brewery (full name Forst special beer brewery , formerly Forsterbräu ; in Italian, Birra Forst SpA ) is the largest brewery in South Tyrol . It is located in the Algund fraction of Forst near Merano . A bottling plant is operated in Palermo to enable delivery to Sicily . With an annual production of 700,000 hectoliters, production is at the top of the regional rankings. The company includes the mineral water distributors "Meraner Mineralwasser" and "Kaiserwasser" as well as eight Forsterbräus, which are located in the most important localities in South Tyrol. Further forest breweries are run in Trento and Trieste .

history

The Forst brewery was founded in 1857 by the then town clerk of Merano, Franz Tappeiner, and the farmer Johann Wallnöfer. In 1863 the company was taken over by Josef Fuchs, who pushed ahead with the expansion of the brewery at its current location. The Fuchs-von Mannstein family is the fourth generation to run the company.

The Forst beer is not brewed according to the German purity law , as breweries in Italy are subject to the Italian food law. In addition to barley malt, this also allows the use of other types of grain. Maize gritz is also used in Forst beer .
