The Hofstetten Krammer GmbH & Co KG brewery is a beer brewery in the municipality of Sankt Martin im Mühlkreis ( Upper Austria ). It is listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the oldest brewery in Austria.

history

Hofstetten was first mentioned in a document in 1229 as a property of the Pibersteiners , whereby it is assumed that beer was already brewed for the restaurant in the manor with a rest area on the Via Regia . The brewery is listed in the Guinness Book of Records as “Austria's oldest brewery” with the year 1229. At that time, today's Hofstetten brewery was probably run as a restaurant for the commercial travelers on the Salzstrasse , which led through the middle of St. Martin. A brewery in Hofstetten was not actually mentioned until 1449 in the Wallsee land register . The earliest brewery coat of arms is preserved on a tin plate from 1560.

After the company was initially a manorial brewery, it later became a privately owned company. A production of 680 buckets is reported from the year 1728 , in 1795/97 the output was 1809 buckets. In 1847 the cattle dealer Kaspar Krammer , who came from Ottau ( Bohemia ), bought the indebted property. The brewery has been owned by the Krammer family since this year. In 1925/26 the output was 2145 hectoliters, in 1929 the capacities were expanded.

In 1998 Peter Krammer took over the brewery from his father Franz and outsourced the bottling to the Schlägl monastery brewery . In 1999 the guided tours were expanded and the tasting room was remodeled. The output rose between 2000 and 2008 from 5000 hl to 5700 hl and finally to 8,000 hl in 2016. Peter Krammer especially expanded the range of strong beers. Since September 2008 he has also been exporting beer to the USA.

The Hofstetten brewery is active in the Mühlviertel brewery cooperation "Bierviertel".

Types of beer

The Hofstetten brewery offers classic Austrian beers such as Märzen beer , Christmas buck or special beer , as well as a Pilsbier and various bock and special beers. The "Kübelbier", a Zwickelbier , which owes its name to the fact that it was tapped from the storage tank into a bucket and served in the Braustüberl, achieved particular fame . Furthermore, a pumpkin beer is offered in autumn, which is fermented with pumpkin juice. In addition to the “granite beer”, an amber-colored special beer, master brewer Jens Luckart also brews various beers with honey. A honey beer and the organic honey goat are produced for “Die Hochlandimker”. In addition to honey, oats are also added to the “scapegoat”. In 2008 the "Granitbock" was brewed for the first time, for which glowing granite purposes are dipped into the wort. For the American market, the brewery also developed the Saphir-Bock, a Bock beer brewed with the sapphire hop variety, as well as other special beers.
