history

Piberstein was probably built between 1200 and 1250 by the brothers Ruga and Arnold von Piberstein from the Piber family. The brothers belonged to the feudal people of the Lords of Griesbach and Waxenberg. The exact time of construction is not known. Around 1285 Rüdiger and Ottokar von Piberstein are mentioned as owners. The castle served as the center of the clearing of the surrounding forest. After the Pibersteiner died out, Ulrich von Tann acquired the now sovereign castle. In 1350 Walchum Haderer became the owner. Duke Rudolf IV gave it to Zacharias Haderer in 1362. From 1386, many different owners followed in a short time: 1386 Heinrich Aichberger and Wolfgang Aschauer, 1393 Friedrich von Stahaleck, 1403 Heinrich von Puchberg, 1407 Jobst Haderer and 1412 Heinrich III. from Falkenstein. Under Hans von Rohrbach, the Hussites besieged the castle unsuccessfully in 1427 . In 1428 the brothers Kaspar and Balthasar von Schallenberg bought it , as their seat in Ortisei was destroyed by the Hussites and they kept the castle for a long time.

In 1594 Piberstein was one of the bulwarks against the Turkish threat in the Mühlviertel. Around 1620, the castle was expanded in the Renaissance style under Georg Christian von Schallenberg . The two courtyards were clad with artificial marble and the walls were decorated with sgraffito paintings. In 1625 imperial troops occupied the castle. In 1645 the fiefdom was converted into free property. In 1675 Christoph Ehrenreich von Schallenberg sold the castle to Elias von Seeau. In 1702 the castle was combined with Helfenberg Castle and a Fideikommiss was set up. A planned reconstruction in 1752 did not materialize, and over time the uninhabited castle fell into disrepair. In 1893 the Counts Revertera-Salandra bought the castle. In the 1930s the castle was operated as a hotel and restaurant, but continued to deteriorate.

In 1964 the restorer Harald Seyrl started a renovation for the now ruin . Hubert Taxenecker continued this from 1971. A fire broke out in 2002 but hardly damaged the castle. Today the castle is a regional cultural center for concerts, exhibitions and readings as well as music festivals.

description

The castle is an extensive complex at 760  m above sea level. A. , whose main castle is 784 square meters and the outer castle is 2730 square meters. The whole complex is surrounded by a four to six meter high wall, which is reinforced with four three-quarter- round defense towers and a square gate tower . Of the medieval defenses, only the loopholes can be seen. To the left of the gate tower there is a chapel from 1730. According to oral tradition, an escape tunnel leads from the castle into the neighboring forest.

There are some farm buildings on the inside, the left part of the castle courtyard is undeveloped. The main castle has two entrance oriels on the outside and is protected by a two meter thick and 15 meter high wall. The portal of the castle gate was walled up around 1620 when the entrance to the main castle was relocated to the northwest side. The middle courtyard is accessed through a high arched gate .

On the ground floor of the adjoining building there is a hall that is connected to the courtyard via two arcades . Opposite a staircase from 1620 leads to an arcade that leads to the knight's hall , which was reconstructed in 1992 . The Palas is in the midst of the rocks. Today nothing can be seen of the former square residential tower . The tower, measuring around 7.5 by 7.5 meters, was in ruins as early as 1752 and previously served as the Piber's living quarters.

Since 1975 the castle has been saved from further deterioration. Thanks to the commitment of the owner, the communities and associations in Ahorn and Helfenberg as well as the support of the Upper Austrian provincial government, a wide range of cultural activities is offered, so that today the castle is a cultural center of the district.
