history

Gasthof Kuchlbauer
Kuchlbauer brewery

The brewing industry has always had an important economic position in the city of Abensberg. In the past there were up to seven breweries in the city, three of which have survived to the present day. The Kuchlbauer brewery is believed to be the oldest documented brewery in the city of Abensberg. A document dated June 29, 1499 already mentions a brewery, at that time the "Mathus-Bräu-Haus" opposite the town hall, which was owned by the Stanglmair family. At the beginning of the 18th century the brewery was owned by the brothers Franz and Christian Münsterer, who sold it in 1751 to Josef Amann, the "Kuchlpaur", at the Regensburg monastery . Since then, the brewery, to which an inn belongs, has been called Zum Kuchlbauer . In 1904 the property was acquired by the Salleck family. In the same year, the Kuchlbauer property on the town square burned down completely and was rebuilt in its current form by the Regensburg architect Joseph Koch. The brewery inn is still located here. The brewery itself is now producing a few hundred meters from the gates of the old town. Today it is run in the ninth generation of brewery boss Jacob Horsch. From 1980 to 1985, the Kuchlbauer brewery also owned a restaurant on board a historic paddle steamer that was moored not far from the Iron Bridge in Regensburg . With effect from January 1, 2019, Kuchlbauer took over the Schlossbrauerei zu Sandersdorf .

structure

The Kuchlbauer is one of the largest country breweries in Bavaria. The company operates in the legal form of a GmbH & Co. KG and employs around 60 people. The annual output is around 110,000 hectoliters. Since 1997, the company has held 100% of the shares in the special brewery Schierling, which is linked to a profit and loss transfer agreement .

art

In 2009, Leonhard Salleck had the Kuchlbauer tower planned by Friedensreich Hundertwasser built on the brewery's premises . The foundation stone was laid on April 23, 2007. The tower was opened to visitors for the first time in January 2010. Other parts of the brewery are decorated with the typical tile art of Hundertwasser.

A full-size copy of Leonardo da Vinci's Last Supper is on display in the brewery's basement . For this purpose, Leonhard Salleck published the book The Key to Leonardo da Vinci's Last Supper .
