The brown-headed parrot ( Psittacella picta ) is a species of bird belonging to the genus of the parakeets . The species is endemic to the island of New Guinea .

features

With a size of approx. 19 cm and a weight of 48 to 68 g , the brown-headed parrot is significantly smaller than the Brehm parrot , but larger than the olive parrot and the Madarasz parakeet . The male has a blue-gray beak, the head is dark brown with a yellow stripe on the side, which, unlike the pretzel parrot, is also drawn over the neck. The back is banded green and black, the wings and the belly are green, the base of the tail is red, the tip of the tail is green. The female lacks the yellow head stripe, the cheeks are blue-green and the chest is banded yellow-black. The young resemble the female, but the head is completely brown. The lorentzi subspecies has blue-green cheeks and no red at the base of the tail.

Habitat

Its habitat includes tropical mountain forests and subalpine shrubbery zones at an altitude of 1500 to 2100 m.

nutrition

The diet consists of fruits, seeds, berries, buds and leaves.
