The Braunschweiger Men's Choir from 1846 e. V. , or BMGV for short, is a men's choir in Braunschweig , which can look back on a long tradition and has played a leading role in the cultural history of the Braunschweig region .

history

In December 1845, the Liederkranz was founded in the medical garden in Braunschweig . The founders of this association decided to name the Braunschweiger Männer-Gesang-Verein (Braunschweig Men's Singing Association) as of March 5, 1846 . The manufacturer EWT Grassau was elected president and father of songs. The BMGV appeared publicly several times in the year it was founded. In the summer of 1846 the BMGV was asked to organize a singing festival in the Asse , in which about 450 singers took part. Many citizens of Braunschweig joined the association in a short time, so that it had 21 active and 175 passive members at its first concert on December 12, 1846.

In the period that followed, numerous concerts, foundation festivals and singing trips with singers from Braunschweig, Hanover, Nienburg, Wernigerode, Bremen, Hamburg, Berlin, Worms, Wuppertal and Vienna were organized, and the BMGV participated in large singing festivals organized by the Association of the United North German Song Tables . The BMGV has belonged to the federal government - now the Lower Saxony-Bremen Choir Association - since 1851.

The outstanding position of the BMGV is also evident in the 10th anniversary in 1856, which was organized as a jubilee celebration for the North German Singers' Union and at which 900 foreign and 450 local singers performed in front of over 5000 spectators. In the invitation letter, the political message of the BMGV, which campaigned for more civic self-confidence, becomes clear. a. by remembering the tradition of the Hanseatic League . However, the program mainly contained heroic accents to strengthen the military morale of the Germans in support of national unity efforts, e.g. B. Franz Abbot's prayer during the battle or the victory hymn by Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy . As early as 1861, the BMVg was counted among the most influential singing associations alongside the Nuremberg and Cologne singing associations.

The musical successes of the BMGV were made possible primarily by well-known choir masters. From 1852 to 1882 the composer and ducal court conductor Franz Abt was the musical director of the BMGV. After the Second World War, the conductor and choir director of the Staatstheater Braunschweig , Kurt Teichmann, took over the choir and directed it from 1946 to 1977.

In the 1970s and 1980s, many singers, whose clubs were dissolved, joined the BMGV. But even the BMGV could not resist the decline of the men's choir and is now only able to sing in a choir community. In order to preserve the historical tradition, all essential memorabilia and the magnificent cupboard from 1896 were donated to the Braunschweig City Museum between 1986 and 1999, and the documents were given to the City Archives. Since 2002, the BMGV has sponsored the youth choir Belcanto , which has joined it as a youth department.
