Bray Studios (England)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Bray Studios are a film and television production workshop in the village of Bray, near Maidenhead in England . Here film recordings as well as model and animation scenes for well-known television series and movies were produced.

They were founded in 1952 by the Hammer Films company .

Hammer rented old English country houses for his horror film productions from the 1930s . Most of the filming was done in a mansion called Down House near the Thames . In 1952 the production set up a permanent studio on the premises and named it after the municipality of Bray in which the country house is located. The last Hammer production film at this location was The Curse of the Mummy in 1966 . Four years later, Hammer sold the studios.

In the early 1970s, the musical The Rocky Horror Show , which was already successful in London, was turned into a film there and in the neighboring Oakley Court Castle , which had previously often been used for hammer films, and which had worldwide success as The Rocky Horror Picture Show .

In addition, special effects and animations for the BBC series Doctor Who , Moon Base Alpha 1 (first season) and the movie Alien were produced at Bray Studios.

Today, the Bray Studios accommodate various television productions, film works and concert rehearsals in their rooms and stages. Since the property is currently (as of 2015) being converted into an area with condominiums , the existence of the studios in their previous form is threatened.
