The Bregava ( Serbian - Cyrillic Брегава ; formerly Vidošica ) is a left tributary of the Neretva in the south of Bosnia and Herzegovina . It rises from a karst spring on the southern slope of the Hrgud massif a few kilometers east of Stolac and flows into the Neretva after 31 km at Klepci in the municipality of Čapljina .
Catchment area
Its catchment area has an area of 722.4 km². It also includes the Dabarsko polje , a topographically separated from the Bregava valley and higher situated polje with an area of 32 km². This works as a water collection basin for the springs of the Bregava at Suhavići and Bitunja . More water comes from Gatačko polje near Gacko, 40 km to the east .
Before the ponor of Biograd (municipality of Nevesinje ) collapsed , the water from the Nevesinjsko polje also flowed over the Bregava into the Neretva. Today it comes to light at the well-known Buna spring 20 km further north.
Through an artificially created tunnel, water is discharged from the Dabarsko polje via the Fatničko polje into the basin of the Bileća dam and thus into the catchment area of the Trebišnjica .
development
Downstream from Stolac, the Bregava is losing more and more water to the Deransko blato marshland to the south through drainage holes created in various places , so that the river only carries water there periodically. Due to the natural development in karst areas , the Bregava valley will permanently dry out in the long term.
history
About 7 km west of Stolac, stone-age rock paintings were found in the Badanj cave in the rock walls of the Bregava valley.
During the Bosnian War , the valley was fought over hard between Bosniaks, Croats and Serbs from 1993; almost the entire population fled, was displaced or perished. Even today many villages are almost or completely uninhabited.
use
The Bregava is one of the few tributaries of the Neretva that run above ground along its entire length and thus enables intensive agriculture in the area around Stolac. There are several historic stone bridges over the Bregava in the city. Downstream it is considered to be periodically flowing water.
The Stolac basketball club is named after the river KK Iskra Bregava Stolac .
