Residential and commercial building at Breite Strasse 2 in Wernigerode

The house at Breite Straße 2 is a listed building in the town of Wernigerode in the Harz district in Saxony-Anhalt . It is a residential and commercial building.

Architecture and history

The building is located on Breite Straße , one of the city's main shopping streets. It is three stories. On the roof there are three dormer windows facing Breite Straße . The street front of the building was built with functional, simple half-timbering. There is a motto on the upper wooden beam on the ground floor, which was renewed in 1935.

A traditional goldsmith's shop has been located on the lower floor of the building since the 19th century, the owner of which also served as purveyor to the court for the Fürst zu Stolberg-Wernigerode family , as evidenced by the gilded coat of arms above the shop entrance. Alfred Gadebusch, after whom the shop is still named, took over this goldsmith's business (formerly Pape) and further developed the craftsmanship of goldsmithing. Some of his excellent works are now in the museum at Wernigerode Castle .

Immediately next to the house is the Café Wien from 1583.

In the years 1895/96 the house was owned by the goldsmith Alfred Gadebusch. At that time it consisted of the house with a side building on the left and a courtyard and a stable on the left.

The house is listed in the monument register of the city of Wernigerode as a monument under registration number 094 25034.
