Gerhard Fröhlich

Gerhard Fröhlich (* 1953 in Wels , Upper Austria ) is an Austrian cultural theorist and science researcher .

Career and work

Gerhard Fröhlich studied political science, social philosophy and sociology at the University of Vienna (among others with Erhard Oeser and Erich Bodzenta ) and received his doctorate there in 1981 with a focus on science research . After studying in Hanover, a. a. at Oskar Negt , he worked from 1982 to 1987 as a research assistant and lecturer at the Institute for Sociology and Social Anthropology at the University of Erlangen-Nürnberg with Henrik Kreutz , before he worked as a university assistant at the Johannes Kepler University Linz (JKU), Institute for Philosophy and Theory of Science (first with Rudolf Wohlgenannt, then with Volker Gadenne) changed. He completed his habilitation at the JKU in 2004 for the subject “Cultural Theory and Science Studies” and worked there as an associate professor until his retirement at the end of 2018 (2017-2018 also as head of the Institute for Philosophy).

He has also been chairman of the so-called “Cultural Institute at the JKU” ​​since 1990 (until today, 2020) and since 1996 (until today, 2018) spokesman for the “Section Cultural Theory and Cultural Research” of the Austrian Society for Sociology .

From 2004 (until 2018) he was also deputy. Head of the "Institute for Cultural Industry and Cultural Research" at the Johannes Kepler University Linz (JKU), where he is still active today.

Gerhard Fröhlich has been chairman of the "Austrian Society for Documentation and Information (ÖGDI)" since 2017.

Gerhard Fröhlich founded (together with Ingo Mörth , since 1998), edits and maintains three comprehensive Open Access online projects ( databases ) to this day (with Ingo Mörth and others ), namely the networked world catalogs (all languages) of the manuscripts and Publications by Pierre Bourdieu , Norbert Elias and Clifford Geertz .

Gerhard Fröhlich has also been in charge of organizing annual symposia on controversial issues of (new) media, politics, science and culture, with substantial funding from the Austrian Society for Political Education (ÖGPB), most recently:
