Harald H. Zimmermann

Harald H. Zimmermann (born June 18, 1941 in Völklingen ; † December 28, 2019 in Völklingen) was a German information scientist and university professor . At the end of the 2006 summer semester, he ended his academic career as a university professor for information science at the Saarland University in Saarbrücken and retired.

Basic research in computational linguistics

As a student (at the beginning of the 1960s) he was already working on a combination of humanities and natural sciences (language and computers) that was still unusual at the time - computational linguistics , then called "language data processing". To be mentioned here are:

  • his dissertation "The Lexicon in Machine Language Analysis" (1972),
  • co-founding the computer linguistic focus in Saarbrücken,
  • the establishment of the first information linguistics chair in Germany (University of Regensburg, 1974),
  • participation in the foundation of the European machine translation project EUROTRA,
  • the implementation of numerous large application projects in the field of machine translation (TRANSIT, MARIS) and automatic indexing (CTX, IDX) with DFG and BMFT projects.

academic career

Shortly after his doctorate (1972) he took over a professorship at the University of Regensburg (1974) and headed the department for non-numerical data processing, a little later the establishment of a subject “Linguistic Information Science” within the framework of general linguistics followed. In 1980 he took on the task of setting up the information science course at Saarland University and at the same time examining the feasibility of a specialist information center "Humanities" (FIZ 14) - which was not established for political reasons. He held the professorship for information science until his retirement after the 2006 summer semester.
