The Breitenseer Lichtspiele , also called Breitenseer Kino, are a shop cinema in the Breitensee district in Vienna's 14th district of Penzing . It is one of the oldest cinemas in the world that is still in use.

background

In 1905 the cinema was founded as a tent cinema near its current location on Breitenseer Straße in Vienna. The cinema moved to its current location as early as 1909. The Breitenseer Lichtspiele are a typical shop cinema, built into a Wilhelminian-style corner house. In its heyday, the cinema had numerous regulars - including the Viennese dialect poet HC Artmann . Back then the regular guests always had their own reserved seat.

The cinema is an art house cinema that only plays Austrian and European films. In addition to the evening screenings of films, a children's program also runs several times a week. In addition, there are regular silent film screenings, which are sometimes accompanied by text or music. For this occasion there is still a functioning piano in the Breitenseer Lichtspiele.

The owner of the cinema is the retired AHS teacher Anna Nitsch-Fitz. According to Nitsch-Fitz, it is only possible through the choice of program to run such an old cinema with today's competition, both through television and through the big cinemas. Above all, she is proud of the old film projector , which still works today.

The “Strickfilm” campaign has been running since April 2013. During these special screenings, which take place every 6 weeks, the lighting in the cinema is only dimmed a little so that the audience has enough light to knit . The idea for this came from Susanne Kristek, founder of the 1st Viennese knitting club. The series of "Strickfilme" started with the Austrian production Zweisitzrakete .

The cinema has had economic problems for years. A closure in June 2017 could be averted.
