The broad-winged grass owl ( Mythimna pudorina ), sometimes also referred to as bog meadow white- armed owl , is a butterfly ( moth ) from the family of owl butterflies (Noctuidae).

description

butterfly

The wingspan of the moth is 35 to 43 millimeters. The forewings are relatively wide. Their upper side varies in reddish-gray, ocher-gray or white-gray colors. Sometimes there is a weak, blackish over-dusting, but there are no dark points at the edge. Blemishes and cross lines are also missing. The veins are pale whitish. The upper side of the hind wing is not marked and corresponds in color to the forewings.

A genital morphological examination is advisable to distinguish reliably from similar Mythimna species .

Caterpillar

Adult caterpillars have a gray-yellow color, a light, dark-edged topline, dark-brown, broad, dark-brown secondary ridges with a light border, and several narrow brownish to reddish side stripes. The spiracles are black.

Doll

There are two long tips on the cremaster of the red-brown slender doll .

distribution and habitat

The broad-winged grass owl is widespread in the temperate zone of Central Europe. The distribution area extends east through the middle of Asia to Korea and Japan . It prefers to live on bushy wet meadows as well as in moors, swamps, swamp forests and riverside areas. It is absent in the higher mountains.

Way of life

The species forms one generation per year, which can be found from May to early August. The moths were observed sucking on flutter rush ( Juncus effusus ), fly to artificial light sources and appear on baits . The caterpillars' food plants are various grasses, for example sedges ( Carex ) and reeds ( Phragmites ). The species overwinters as a caterpillar.

Danger

The broad-winged grass owl occurs in different frequencies in the German federal states and is listed on the red list of endangered species as "not endangered".
