In the chronicle of the Callen family, a "Branntwynbrenner" is reported as early as 1700. The founding building stood on the former Auguststrasse in Wanne-Süd on a leased site from the farmer Storp. Grain has been distilled here since the beginning of the 19th century. The site was later sold by its owner for the construction of the main train station . The distillery therefore moved to the former Blücherstraße in 1889 (then renamed Am Bahndamm 6 ), now Heitkampsfeld. With the relocation, the master distiller Wilhelm Conrad Callen and the merchant Hermann Eicker founded the Eicker & Callen grain distillery on August 29, 1889, a few hundred meters from the former building. At the same place there was already a distillery owned by the farmer Johann Knipping. The company co-founder Eicker left the company after the First World War. The distillery had already achieved local fame under its founding name, so the name of the distillery was retained. After Wilhelm Conrad Callen's death in 1926, two of his children, Elisabeth and Josef, took over the management of the company, which from 1985 was run by master distiller Thomas Callen and his sister Jutta Callen-Kolodziej. Since the beginning of 2015, the distillery has been managed by Peter Meinken under the name Destillerie Eicker & Callen .

Different liquors

The grain brandies are made from wheat or rye malt , yeast and water, triple distilled and matured in wooden barrels. The grain is sourced from local farmers and cooperatives .

The fruit brandies were initially made from the fruit of trees on the Heitkamp BauHolding site . Today these are predominantly obtained from the Naturschutzbund Deutschland .

The best-known product is the “Mond von Wanne-Eickel” liqueur, a wheat-based liqueur with apple and pear juice, which has been produced around the 1960s.

The distillery's products are considered local specialties and cult objects of the formerly independent town of Wanne-Eickel . The names of the liqueurs refer to the city's history or local events and places, such as Der Mond von Wanne-Eickel , Krummer Hund , Cranger Kirmestropfen or Drei-Männer-Eck . The liqueur and other souvenir items are known as cult products throughout the Ruhr area.

The products from Eicker & Callen are only available in a few shops that sell cult objects from Wanne-Eickel , in the house business and in the mail order business.
