Brian M. Hoffman
Brian Mark Hoffman (born August 7, 1941 in Chicago ) is an American biochemist.
Hoffman graduated from the University of Chicago with a bachelor's degree in chemistry in 1962 and received a PhD in chemistry from Caltech in 1966 . In 1967 he became an assistant professor and in 1974 professor of chemistry and biochemistry at Northwestern University .
Using electron-nuclear double resonance spectroscopy (Endor), he investigates the mode of action of biologically important enzymes (geometry of the binding sites, intermediate stages) such as NO synthases , cytochrome P450 and nitrogenase . Another research focus is long-range electron transfer between proteins.
In 2012 he received the Joseph Chatt Award and in 2013 the FA Cotton Medal . He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences , the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (2002) and the American Association for the Advancement of Science (1983). From 1971 to 1973 he was a Sloan Research Fellow .
