Brian Hyland
Brian Hyland (born November 12, 1943 in Brooklyn , New York City ) is an American pop singer.
Life
Brian first came into contact with music at the age of nine in the church choir, he learned to play the clarinet and guitar and at the age of twelve he founded a music group called The Delfis. With them he made a demo tape in 1959 and offered it to various New York record companies. Thanks to his tenacity, he managed to get a contract as a solo singer with the record company Kapp Records , which already had stars like Jane Morgan , Eartha Kitt and the pianist Roger Williams under contract. The neglected first record with the titles Rosemary and Library Love Affair was followed by a worldwide success in the summer of 1960. With the Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini produced by Richard Wolfe (text and music: Paul Vance and Lee Pockriss), 16-year-old Brian Hyland stormed the top of the American charts. The title was also internationally successful. In Great Britain the title reached number 9 in the charts, in Germany the single also landed at number 9.
After the two following records could not build on this success, Hyland moved in 1961 to the larger record company ABC Records , which at that time had stars like Paul Anka and Ray Charles under contract. There, the writer and producer couple Geld and Udell took on him, who provided Hyland with more hits for the next few years. Sealed with a Kiss (arranged by Stan Applebaum ) is the most successful title of the time, which made it to number three on the US pop charts in the spring of 1962. German-language versions with Brian Hyland have been published in Germany of this title as well as of Ginny Come Lately . In Germany the single was released on the Philips label and reached number 10 in the charts. At that time, Hyland was constantly on the road in the States, appearing on national and local television shows, and covering many miles with the Caravan of Stars. In 1963 he organized an extensive tour of England with Little Eva , after which he toured South America with Neil Sedaka . In the second half of the sixties the Hyland records were no longer successful as usual, he then switched to the record companies Philips and Dot . It was not until 1970, now at the age of 27, that he was able to report back with a super hit. With his self-produced Gypsy Woman (text and music Curtis Mayfield ), released by one of his other new record companies UNI, he reached number three on the American pop charts, he received his first gold record and the song found over three million buyers internationally. That England was still particularly good terrain for Brian Hyland was also proven by the fact that after 13 years a long-playing record with the titles Sealed With A Kiss and Ginny Come Lately came sixth in the British charts.
In 1977, Hyland and his family settled in New Orleans. Until the eighties, Hyland was constantly in the studios to record new singles and long-playing records, which found ample buyers in both the United States and Europe. On his tours he was accompanied as a drummer by his son Bodi. Brian has also been a songwriter since the 1970s and later also had his own music studio. Together with his wife Rosmari, he wrote two books on rock and roll. Currently (as of 2019) Hyland is still active as a musician and touring the United States.
