Brian Ortega

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Brian "T-City" Ortega (born February 21, 1991 ) is an American mixed martial arts fighter. He is currently (February 2019) in first place in the Featherweight Division of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). His professional career began in April 2010. In January 2014, Ortega won the featherweight title in the Resurrection Fighting Alliance RFA . He has been fighting in the UFC since July 2014.

Careers in the UFC

Brian Ortega made his UFC debut on July 26, 2014 at the UFC on FOX 12: Lawler vs. Brown against the American Mike de la Torre in the SAP Center, San Jose, USA. Ortega managed to force de la Torre to give up in minute 1:39 of the first lap using the rear-naked choke. The victory marked Ortegas fifth by submission, four of which he achieved in the first round. In retrospect, the fight was declared a no contest , as Ortega was shown to have taken the anabolic steroid drostanolone in a urine test by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) . This was followed by a nine-month suspension and $ 2,500 fine by the California State Athletic Commision (CSAC).

On June 6, 2015, Brian Ortega fought against the Brazilian Thiago Tavares. Due to deep cuts over Tavares' right eye, the competition almost stopped in the second round, but the doctor decided against it. Ortega won via TKO / KO in the 3rd round. Both fighters won the UFC's Fight of the Night bonus of $ 50,000.

On January 2, 2016, Ortega won against the Brazilian Diego Brandao. Brandao had the upper hand in the first two rounds. In the third round, Ortega was able to demonstrate his Jiu-Jitsu skills. After a few unsuccessful submission attempts, he forced Brandao to give up using triangle choke .

Ortega played on June 4, 2016 against the American Clay Guida in the Octagon, at the event UFC 199: Rockhold vs. Bisping 2 . In the third round Ortega won the fight with a knee knockout.

On October 1, 2016, Ortega was supposed to play against the Brazilian Hacran Dias at UFC Fight Night 96 . In mid-September, Brian Ortega retired from the fight due to a right shoulder injury. He underwent an operation that was performed on his left shoulder in 2011. A ten-month break followed.

After his recovery, he appeared in the event UFC 214: Cormier vs. Jones 2 against the Brazilian Renato Moicano. In the third round Moicano managed a takedown , but Ortega started a guillotine choke and thus forced his opponent to give up. Both fighters received the Fight of the Night bonus.

Ortegas' opponent in his first main event in the UFC on December 9, 2017 was the American Cub Swanson. At the end of the first lap, Swanson was almost forced to retire after Ortega tried to choke a D'Arce. However, the round ended before Ortega could complete the submission. He won the fight in the second round using a flying guillotine choke. Both fighters won the Fight of the Night Bonus, Ortega also won the Performance of the Night Bonus , also for $ 50,000.

Max Holloway (then and at the time of writing the current Featherweight Champion of the UFC) should take part in the UFC 222 event on March 3, 2018 : Cyborg vs. Kunitskaya will defend his title against the American Frankie Edgar . In early February, Holloway withdrew from the fight. The reason given was a leg injury that he sustained during training. As a substitute, Brian Ortega went up against Edgar, who had suffered his five defeats at the time only after point decisions. Brian Ortega won via knockout 16 seconds before the end of the first round. He was the first fighter to achieve a KO / TKO victory against the then 36-year-old veteran of the sport. As in his last competition, Ortega received the Performance of the Night Bonus .

After his victory against Frankie Edgar, who was then in second place in the Featherweight Division (behind the Brazilian Jose Aldo and the reigning champion Max Holloway), Brian Ortega landed in first place and thus became a contender for the title.

The match between Holloway and Ortega has been scheduled for UFC 226 on July 7, 2018. On Wednesday July 4th, Max Holloway was officially withdrawn from the competition because of symptoms of a concussion. Holloway was suspended by the UFC for 30 days, but no medical examination revealed the cause of his symptoms. Brian Ortega was not interested in a replacement fight or an interim title fight and was therefore also removed from the event. According to his own statements, he received no compensation from the UFC.

Ultimately, the title fight against Holloway took place on December 8, 2018, at the event UFC 231: Holloway vs. Ortega . Brian Ortega lost for the first time in his professional career. After the fourth round, the medical team stopped the competition because of Ortega's condition. He suffered a broken nose and a broken thumb on his left hand. The title fight was named Fight of the Night , both opponents received the corresponding bonus (see above).
