Bridget of York

Bridget of York (born November 10, 1480 in Eltham Palace , London , † 1517 in Dartford Priory, Kent ) was an English princess. She was the seventh and youngest daughter of King Edward IV and his wife Elizabeth Woodville .

Life

Bridget was born as the youngest of ten children of King Edward IV and his wife Elizabeth Woodville on November 10, 1480 at Eltham Palace in London. The following day she was baptized by Edward Story, the Bishop of Chichester . Her paternal grandmother, Cecily Neville, Duchess of York and her eldest sister Elizabeth of York stood at the baptismal font as godmothers . In addition, William Waynflete , Bishop of Winchester , was her godfather. Presumably she was named after St. Birgitta of Sweden (English: Bridget).

Her parents may have determined at birth that she should devote her life to religion. She was entrusted to Dartford Priory in Dartford , Kent sometime between 1486 and 1492 and became a nun.

Bridget corresponded throughout her life with her sister, Queen Elizabeth, who also covered her minor expenses. Elizabeth also financed small expenses for the orphan Agnes of Eltham, who also lived in the monastery. This led to speculation that Bridget was their mother, but this cannot be proven.

It is known that Bridget left Dartford at least once, for her mother's funeral in 1492.

Bridget died around 1517.

Movie and TV

Bridget is played by Heidi Ely in the series The White Princess .
