action

The young Alexander Below returned to Moscow in 1989 after completing his military service in Afghanistan. Much has changed in the country in the two years of his absence in the wake of perestroika . His girlfriend is now in a relationship with the aspiring little boy Mucha. Two of his three best friends Fil, Kosmos and Ptschela (“Biene”) have also decided to earn money by extorting protection money and initially unsuccessfully try to persuade Alexander to join in too. After a jealous drama, the situation between Alexander and Mucha escalates. When the latter is violently killed in a tumult, the corrupt policeman blames Kawerin on Alexander, who is henceforth wanted as a murderer. Through all kinds of manipulation at a high level (Kosmos' father has good relationships with important people), the situation for Alexander is finally defused; however, he has to go into hiding for two years and begins a criminal career.

In the course of the following years, under Alexander's leadership, the friends developed their illegal machinations with great skill, took over an import-export company through fraud and blackmail and indulged in wealth. In doing so, "the brigade" has to assert itself again and again, often in a bloody way, against competition in the underworld. Not least because of his wife Olga, Alexander plans to legalize business and establish contacts with a high-ranking politician. But the FSB also becomes aware of the gang. In order to avoid being arrested, in 1994 Alexander responded to a request by an FSB agent to deliver large numbers of weapons to the militias in Chechnya . In the end, he has to cooperate with Kawerin, who has lost his position as a policeman and who has since climbed the criminal career ladder himself with great sophistication. In 1995 the war breaks out in Chechnya .

When Below finally learns that Kawerin is responsible for his murder accusation in 1989, the hostility between the two comes to a head, which initially ends with the supposed death of Kawerin. However, Kawerin reappears as a candidate for the 1999 State Duma elections. Below decides to also run. After a dirty election campaign, Alexander becomes a narrow winner. In cold rage, Kawerin then sends a killer to the Belows party on election evening, who brutally kills Kosmos, Ptschela, Fil and his wife with a combat knife. Below decides despite the open career as a politician and against the advice of all friends to take revenge on Kawerin. He fakes his own death. Kawerin and his people then seem to feel safe and are shot by Alexander. Olga and her son emigrate to America. Below stays behind so as not to endanger his family.
