Private life

Brigitta Zeumer was the eldest daughter of H. Rochlitz and A. Rochlitz, nee Schürer. In 1959 she completed her school education with the Abitur and then studied social and newspaper sciences in Wilhelmshaven and Hamburg. She married and moved to Cologne in 1967. The marriage produced three sons.

Zeumer died in 2015 at the age of 76 and was buried in the Melaten cemetery in Cologne (Flur 21 (U) No. 501).

Artistic development

In the second half of her life, Brigitta Zeumer recognized her artistic calling. As a student (1969–1971) of Karl-Anton Räderscheidt (* 1924, son of Anton Räderscheidt ), she initially concentrated on oil paintings from 1969–1975. She had her first solo exhibition with landscapes in the Kreissparkasse in Cologne in 1971, and more made her known beyond her home state of North Rhine-Westphalia. In addition to a phase in which Brigitta Zeumer also made etchings, she shifted the focus to watercolors in 1975. On this basis, international success soon arose. In 1988 her watercolors were awarded first prize in a competition held by the Del Bello Gallery in Toronto, Canada, among 60 countries.

In the 1990s, Brigitta Zeumer's work became more abstract, large-format, colorful and pointed through several trips to East Asia and through her preoccupation with East Asian art. Her works found particular recognition in the People's Republic of China. In 1995 she received the Justice / Peace medal in Chang Chun, China.

In 1999 she led several workshops at the German School in Singapore. In 2001 she received a scholarship at Haus Rissen in Hamburg. From 1991 she gave many radio and television interviews at home and abroad. For example, on April 6, 2003, an interview with her was broadcast on nrw-tv as part of the “Artist Portrait” series.

Numerous pictures by the artist are in private collections as well as in the collections of museums, cities, banks and savings banks.

Brigitta Zeumer developed an increasingly freer abstraction from the representation of landscape. The colors used reveal elements of the landscape or architecture, but what is depicted always remains suspended. In the later years of her work, she also made abstract objects from various materials such as bronze, stone or glass.
