Brigitte Behrens

Brigitte Behrens (born April 2, 1951 in Würzburg ) was General Manager of Greenpeace Germany from 1999 to 2016 .

Life

Brigitte Behrens first studied human medicine and then switched to sociology . In 1979 she went to Hamburg , where she completed her studies with a degree in sociology. She campaigned against the construction of nuclear power plants, especially Brokdorf , and worked for several years in women's projects . Among other things, she helped set up the women's bar in Hamburg in 1976/1977, at that time the first communication center only for women.

In 1986 she went to Greenpeace and initially worked there as an assistant to the management. In 1988 she became provisional and then deputy managing director, and in 1999 the supervisory board made her the main management. In addition, she was a trustee (asset manager) from 1990 to 1997. In this position she represented Greenpeace Germany at Greenpeace International and took on special tasks within the international organization.

Since 2002 Brigitte Behrens was supported by the deputy managing director Roland Hipp , but was legally the sole responsible managing director for Greenpeace eV within the meaning of § 26 BGB. Her environmental protection work focuses on the fight against climate change, the prevention of a renaissance of nuclear energy and genetic engineering in agriculture, and the protection of the seas and primeval forests. On July 1, 2016, Behrens handed over the office to Roland Hipp and has since retired.
