Brill has probably been settled since the Roman Empire . This is indicated by finds of charcoal, slag and ceramics, which are dated to the period between the 1st and 4th centuries. The place name is first mentioned in 1637. It is interpreted as a derivation of the Gaulish - Middle Latin word bro (g) ilus , which stands for a manorial meadow or an enclosed wildlife park , but was later interpreted as a damp meadow .

In Brill lies the Radbodsberg , a burial mound in which, according to popular tradition, the Frisian king Radbod is supposed to be buried. Frau von Brill from the Bronze Age, discovered in the village, is one of the most important finds of this period in East Frisia.
