Britta Altenkamp graduated from high school in 1984 and then studied German , history and sociology at the University of Essen without obtaining a degree. From October 1999 to May 2000 she worked for a marketing and advertising agency in Essen.

She has been a member of the SPD since 1985. From 1987 to 1989 she was chairwoman of the Essen Jusos . From 1988 to 1991 employee in the state parliament of North Rhine-Westphalia . From 1991 to 1999 she worked in the constituency office of the SPD MEP Detlev Samland .

Since 1990 she has been a member of the executive board of the SPD Essen, since February 2000 its deputy chairwoman. From 1989 to 1994 she was a member of the district council II of the city of Essen. From 1994 to September 2000 she was a member of the Essen City Council, of which from September 1999 to September 2000 she was a member of the executive committee of the Essen SPD council group.

Since June 2, 2000 - with a short interruption from March 14, 2012 to May 31, 2012 due to the dissolution of the state parliament on March 14, 2012 - she has been a member of the state parliament of North Rhine-Westphalia, where she initially elected the constituency of Essen I as a directly elected member represented. Since 2005, through a restructuring of the electoral districts in Essen, she has represented the state electoral district 67 - Essen III. In this constituency, too, she entered the state parliament in 2005 and 2010. Between 2002 and 2005 she was migration policy spokeswoman for the SPD parliamentary group and from June 2005 to September 2006 she was the spokesperson for generations, family and integration in her parliamentary group. From September 2006 to July 2010 Britta Altenkamp was the deputy chairwoman of the SPD parliamentary group in the state parliament of North Rhine-Westphalia, where she was responsible for the areas of social affairs, health, women, family, children, integration, generations and sport. On July 3, 2011, she resigned from her position as Parliamentary Managing Director of the SPD state parliamentary group in North Rhine-Westphalia. The trigger was that she had broken a pairing agreement two days earlier - when, contrary to the agreement with the CDU , an SPD deputy reported as absent took part in a vote on the future of WestLB without notifying the CDU - and thus triggered a scandal .

Since March 2000 she has also been a member of the state executive committee of the North Rhine-Westphalian SPD and since December 2001 a member of the executive committee of its state executive committee. Since February 2004 she has held the office of deputy state chairman of the NRW-SPD and has been chairwoman of the SPD region Niederrhein since April 2004.
