The Brockman Mine is an iron ore mine in the Pilbara Region of Western Australia , 60 kilometers northwest of Tom Price . The mine is sometimes referred to as the Brockman 2 Mine to distinguish it from the Rio Tinto Group's new Brockman 4 mine in the area.

The mine is 100% owned by Rio Tinto Group and is one of thirteen iron ore mines that the company operates in the Pilbara region. In 2009 the Rio Tinto iron ore mines in the Pilbara produced 202 million tons of iron ore, 15% more than in 2008. The share of world production of iron ore from Rio Tinto from the Pilbara was 13% in 2009; that of world production was 1.59 billion tons.

The Hamersley Range , where the mine is located, contains 80% of Australia's known iron deposits and is one of the largest iron ore deposits in the world.

Rio Tinto's mining activities in the Pilbara began in 1966. The Brockman Mine began production in 1992. The mine has an annual capacity of 8.7 million tons of iron ore, which is mined in open-cast mining. The ore is processed there before being loaded onto railroad trains. The ore from this mine is then transported to the coast by the Hamersley & Robe River Railway , where it is loaded onto ships. Iron ore from the Brockman Mine, such as that from the Mount Tom Price Mine , Paraburdoo Mine , Channar Mine , Eastern Range Mine , Marandoo Mine and Yandicoogina Mine , is transported by rail from the mines to Dampier as raw, fine iron product . Before it is loaded onto the ships for export, it is mixed and sieved. The maximum size of the iron ore pellets is 31.5 mm and the fine iron ore is a maximum of 6.3 mm.

The miners work every two weeks and are flown in and out by air. In 2009, the mine employed 539 people, compared to just 445 in 2008 due to the 2008 financial crisis.

The mine is in close proximity to the Nammuldi Mine , which is also operated by Rio Tinto.

Like the Channar Mine , the Brockman 2 Mine stopped mining during the 2008 financial crisis. During the temporary closure, the monthly production of Rio Tinto fell to 1.6 million tonnes and there was a further decrease in production in other mines.

The Brockman 2 is owned by Hamersley Iron Pty Ltd , a subsidiary of Rio Tinto , the six iron ore mines are in the Pilbara, including both Brockman Mines , and include their holdings in two other iron ore mines in the region.

On August 16, 2011, there was a fatal work accident in the mine when a hydraulic cylinder of a front loader broke, and operations were stopped for a few days. This was the second incident at the Rio Tinto mines in less than three months.

Brockman 4 mine

Rio Tinto's new project, the Brockman 4 Mine, is located near the Brockman Mine. It is a stand-alone mine and opened in 2010. The construction of the mine cost US $ 1.52 billion and it is able to produce 22 million tons per year. According to the plans of Rio Tinto, a doubling of the capacity is planned by the Australian production from 220 million to 330 million tons to increase every year.
