Broder J. Merkel

Broder J. Merkel (born August 23, 1949 in Münster ) is a German hydrogeologist and professor of hydrogeology , most recently at the Technical University Bergakademie Freiberg .

Life

Merkel studied chemistry and geology at the Technical University of Munich , received her doctorate there in 1983 and qualified as a professor at Kiel University in 1992 .

From 1993 to September 2015 he was Professor of Hydrogeology and Hydrochemistry at the TU Bergakademie Freiberg. From 1995 to 2014 he was director of the Institute for Geology there, dean of the Faculty of Geosciences, Geotechnics and Mining for five years and from March 2014 to March 2017 Vice-Rector for Research and Vice-Rector for Strategy Development.

In 1995 Merkel initiated the International Conference Uranium Mining and Hydrogeology (UMH) , which met seven times in Freiberg. He was spokesman for a DFG - Research Training and concentrated particularly on arid hydrogeology, impact of mining on the water, the speciation of elements and numerical modeling of groundwater flow, chemical reactions and the reactive transport modeling . He was a co-founder of the Geoecology course in Freiberg in 1997 and launched the international (English-speaking) master’s course in Groundwater Management in 2010 . In 2002 he and others founded the Scientific Diving Center at the Technical University Bergakademie Freiberg and established two modules that can be used in various courses. Merkel is the founder and publisher of the open access journal FOG - Freiberg Online Geoscience .
