Broderus Pauli (* 1598 in Husum ; † January 19, 1679 in Hamburg ) was a German lawyer and mayor of the Hanseatic city of Hamburg.

Life

Pauli came from a family resident in Husum. He studied law at the universities in Wittenberg, Leipzig, Strasbourg and Basel. After a trip to Italy, he was in 1629 at the University of Helmstedt Dr. PhD in both rights. He successfully established himself as a lawyer in Hamburg and was therefore appointed in 1638 as the Syndicus of the City Council , albeit against opposition from the citizens . As such, in addition to representing the city in court at the Reich Chamber of Commerce, he also participated in the city's diplomatic embassies.

During his term of office, Hamburg's struggle for the status of a Free Imperial City falls , against which the kings of Denmark and the dukes of Schleswig and Holstein successfully blocked themselves well beyond his death until the Gottorp Treaty (1768). His state writing Apologia Hamburgensis led to the confiscation of his property in Dockenhuden and on the return trip from a hearing at Gottorf Castle he was intercepted in Rendsburg and imprisoned for months. Even at a later audience before the Danish king in Hadersleben , he resisted the offer to move to higher Danish state offices. In 1653 he angered the Danish King Friedrich III. again by representing the interests of the Hanseatic City of Hamburg before the Reichstag in Regensburg . In 1670 he was elected mayor in the council. Unsuccessful further negotiations with the Danish king led to an imperial ban on such direct negotiations, with reference to the jurisdiction of the Imperial Chamber Court.

At the Peace of Westphalia in Osnabrück in 1648, Hamburg was represented by the Syndicus Johannes Christoph Meurer , who was also from Husum .
