Brownlow Cecil, 9th Earl of Exeter

Brownlow Cecil, 9th Earl of Exeter ( September 21, 1725 - December 26, 1793 ) was a British peer and politician.

Life

He was the elder son of Brownlow Cecil, 8th Earl of Exeter , and Hannah Sophia Chambers. He was educated at Winchester College and St John's College, Cambridge .

In 1747 he was elected Knight of the Shire for Rutland in the House of Commons . He resigned from the House of Commons in 1754 when he inherited his father's title as Earl of Exeter and Baron Burghley on the death of his father and thus received a seat in the House of Lords . He was also Lord Lieutenant of Rutland.

Between 1755 and 1779 he employed the landscape architect Lancelot "Capability" Brown to have his estate Burghley House designed.

Cecil married twice, Letitia Townshend in 1749 and Anne Maria Cheatham in 1770, but remained childless. When he died in 1793, he was inherited by his nephew Henry Cecil , who was made Marquess of Exeter in 1801 .
